I read the book quite some time ago and now I've watched the film (thanks to Kenneth's recommendation). Finally a film has lived up to the lofty expectations set by the book, a feat not many films can lay claim to.
Not many teachers will think of working part time to fund school trips and buy books for their teachers out of their pockets. I love the way Miss G stands up to her hostile detractors in school. That unfortunately, is the grim 'reality' that many of our educators have acquainted themselves with. You do not go out of your way, depleting resources which could have found themselves of use for a more noble purpose, plainly in the efforts to paving a path on which students of a lesser academic ability can tread upon. We groom students who help themselves. We enrol them in programmes and lessons that would enable them to draft a whole horizon of superiority between themselves and the supposed delinquents.
I fear trying my hand at education upon graduation. I've heard the rewards that beckon but at the same time the stories of horror students and parents mar the beautiful portrait in my mind. Miss G's first day in school staged a preview of the things I should expect. Do I have that nobility in me to sacrifice so much, even my marriage (in her case), just to help a bunch of students who refuse to help themselves? Then again her predicament is vastly different from the ones I might face. Her students behave as such because of their violent lifestyles. Singapore's students, in general, live a comfortable if not extravagant life. The lack of motivation generally can only be attributed to an attitude of a less desirable nature. I've 4 years to decide!
Meeting up with my JC mates later on! Been some time since I last saw them...been too busy with work..luckily today's an off day! It has also been almost 2 months since I touched a football!! OMG...my social life is in ruins...
I've watched so many movies recently...and I find it amusing that I couldn't find a new movie to watch on Thursday! Ended up watching "The Duchess" which, for all its Victorian splendor, wasn't much of an interesting spectacle. Zzzz...I'm just waiting for Red Cliff II! :)))
Recently, I've been made cashier. Its a stressful job...because you'll have to balance any discrepancies with your own money...but it also allows you to work under pressure and deal with some really difficult customers.
There was this Caucasian lady who demanded the reason behind the prices charged to her. She didn't grasp the explanation pretty well and began on her childish tirade that contained insults and expletives. I was fed up but my colleague was even more so. The abuse wasn't directed at me but I felt for my colleague. Before she left, she further stoked the fire by calling my colleague a "stupid Asian". Hai..how juvenile can one get? She is old enough to be my mother and yet she allows an unbecoming spectacle of herself in the full view of the audience at the store. Her ignorance extends itself to her apparent racism. Does she not know that whichever continent she hails from cannot survive without Asia's cooperation? Does she not fathom the very simple logic of the not-so-new phenomenon that is globalisation? Nobody is superior to nobody anymore madam. If any, your actions only showed me what a lowly and uneducated scum you actually are.
Honestly I get the idea behind customer service but some people actually abuse their customer rights. I get very friendly gentlemen and ladies who share their cheers and salutations when I serve them. It feels good and I get a sudden impetus to provide my best service for these people. Service courtesy should be two-way. We serve with a smile and when you as the consumer have had a bad day should just have the basic courtesy to just leave us as we were. Hostility will almost always be met with hostility, its a natural human instinct, an animalistic one even. When confronted with another male lion the lion will very naturally fight back. Humans are different because they have the ability to reason you might say. So we have a part of our brain that tells us to stuff our fist into our mouth when a customer displays aggressive behaviour. Actually we should...*thinking
That would make him/her the animal :D I'll keep that in mind!
